College Application GENERAL Query : Never Seen A College Application Before? ?

April 21st, 2011

Query:

I find it everywhere that colleges look for students who are passionate about what they do and goal driven? But how do they judge that someone is passionate about something? Do they need some kind of certificates of the awards and leadership position and how do I write about my web designing business (reseller hosting and freelance web designer)? I have never seen a college application before?

Where can I find web content pros in NYC please?

April 2nd, 2011

Question about reseller hosting: I am trying to contact web content professionals working on managing content or web projects at web sites or web agencies in NYC (not designers, programmers or technology people – content). Are you one of those? Do you know anyone I could talk to?

My client (I am an independant consultant) Synomia.com is the leader of site search software in France. They now have the biggest market share in site search software in France. They product is a very advanced, very automated, and a very affordable hosted search software for large content web sites (government sites, educational institutions, large corporate sites, etc.).

The goal is to profile the current needs of these professionals in the area of site search services and software. In practical terms, I will organize a meeting attended by senior Synomia management and structured like a high-level focus group on: web usability, content management, web information architecture, search usability, audience measurement on large web properties.

We are not selling anything. We just want your help in understanding what professionals in the US need in the area of site search. Depending on your input, this could become a launch pad for a position with Synomia later or a partnership with your employer (agencies, web integrators, etc.).

We will be in NYC in a couple of weeks. I have been a specialist of Internet software for over 15 years now (Netscape, Infoseek, Disney Internet, etc.). I have created a consulting company that helps European and US-based software publishers, resellers, and buyers partner to take advantage of unique technologies that only exist in one of these two regions.

Thanks in advance for your help and feel free to call on my if there is ever anything I can help with!
Best regards,
Dan

How to setup a web server in a Data center?

April 2nd, 2011

Question about reseller hosting: I’ve been doing web dev for a few years now with my sites being hosted on a shared server.I’m getting a dedicated machine, but a voice in my head is saying "do it yourself." I’ll have my own server & a possibility of having resellers.

My educational background is in Sys Admin,so I have a understanding of what’s needed to setup, secure & maintain systems, but I still need some info.

I’ve come up with a very basic plan of what I think is required:

1. Get a server + setup software (Debian / Redhat + Antivirus? + Network Security? + PHP / MYSQL etc + Cpanel / WHM)
2. Find a data center
3. Find a Teleco to connect the server to the net
4. Maintain system (security+performance) with patches & software updates

Although I need to do more research for step 1 & 4,my main concern is 2 & 3.What do I ask the DC & Telco?Do I setup the server offsite, then send it to the DC for them to connect,or do I personally go in & do it myself? When calling the Telco, what info should I have on hand?

Becoming a Hosting Reseller?

April 1st, 2011

Question about reseller hosting: I’ve worked as a customer service rep for a Web Hosting company and I’m interested in starting my own reseller program. Is that the same thing as starting your own business? For instance, do you have to register a business name, do all that good stuff or is it not necessary?

Thanks in advance.

Shouldn't there be some sort of regulation over domain name resellers?

April 1st, 2011

Question about reseller hosting: I get so sick of dealing with this stuff. How can these people have the nerve to ask 0+ for something that cost them – to register.
It just kills me that i get clients that have certain domain names in mind, i search for the domains and find they have been registered, but the site is just some generic page with a big "This domain is for sale." When i tell the client how much it costs, it might seem like i am trying to jack the price up on them.
I had one client that was dead set on the domain name, so i purchased it for 0 and then had to renew the registration 3 months after the purchase.
I am very reasonable on my pricing when it comes to design, i dont pump the price of the registration or hosting up. How do i tell clients that the site name they want, which should cost – to register for a year, costs 10-20x’s more.

I know i could appeal to the ICANN to try to get the domain, but the process would take too long.
mike, that is true to an extent, but if thats acceptable behavior, then why would ICANN take domains away from people so it can be used for a legitimate business?
They may have registered it and held the registration for some time, but they do not own anything. The government owns it. We are basically leasing it

WordPress folks…please help!!!?

April 1st, 2011

Question about reseller hosting: I have created a wordpress site through hostgator and fantastico with them. It did most of the leg work for me which was great. I didnt have to use ftp because hostgator will extract the files for you from the zip….Now here is the problem, I want to give the site to someone else but keep the files. They dontmind keeping the domain but will change it if necessary. i want to keep the files as somewhat of a blueprint but allow them to upload the sites files or I will do it for them that doesnt matter. So basically I have a few thins I needananswer or clarification on….
!. How doI get a copy of the finalized website files with my additions that were developed on wordpress.org hosted by hostgator?
2. How do I set her up with the site but keep the finalized files? and is an ftp needed or capable of doing this now that the site is already created?
3. How can I simplify the situation in the future because I plan on doing this more often, am I better off being a reseller? and if so, do the same guidelinas apply? I know this is a lengthy question and if you only have part of the answer that would be great also.
